I'm very excited today. system syn has replaced SITD on the 2nd leg of VNV Nation's N. American tour. Since they played Dallas on the first part of the tour, we have to travel to Oklahoma(!) and possibly Kansas, because I loathe Houston. Besides, I can really use a road trip right now! Expect photos and a follow up report.
In the meantime...

I spend so much time perusing other ppl's LJs and lurking on my favorite comms, that I have been extremely remiss posting here. I also don't really have anything to say. I am still unemployed and broke, so very few interesting things have been happening to me lately.
Here's a kindly cut to ease up on your f-list )
Danke!

I find myself making a lot of Star Trek XI icons lately (with some Sylar and random shit thrown in), so I thought I'd put some up on here.
Please comment if you like or use them.

KMFDM in Dallas 10-21-09
cake
[info]marusya_56

Many bands leave Dallas out of their tours in favor of hitting the college cities like Austin, but KMFDM always makes a stop here, and for that I'm always pleased. The last time I saw them was at the Ridglea Theater in Fort Worth, which I guess had a big enough stage for CombiChrist (now THAT was a show!) but I hated the drive. Much happier to make the short trip down Greenville Avenue to the Granada Theater this time.

We missed most of the first opener, I don't even remember who it was now. Angelspit was up next. I've never really listened to them but recognized "100%".  They were pretty to look at, but I couldn't understand a word they shouted.

After the show, they were out in the lobby, selling their own merch and mingling with people. Both were very friendly and gracious. And you have to love the Aussie accents.

I think this was the 12th time I've seen KMFDM, which is weird because I've never considered them one of my favorite bands. However, I have always thoroughly enjoyed their shows. Another great thing about KMFDM is that my son loves them. Although we see a lot of bands together, he complains about the bands I like and vice-versa. So this is one we actually enjoy together. Those moments are few and far between these days.

None of my photos turned out worth a shit, so I'll just drop a few here so you get the idea.

Here's "Godlike", the first of two encores:

November should be a quiet month...haven't seen any shows announced I want to see yet. We'll see...

The Baader Meinhof Complex
restraint
[info]marusya_56
Those that know me are well aware of my love for Germany. Since I can't move there or visit as often as I would like, I see pretty much every German movie I can. Luckily, Dallas has a few theaters that show independent and foreign films.
This week, the Angelika has not one but TWO German films. I chose Der Baader Meinhof Komplex because at almost 2 1/2 hours, it kept me out of the house for a while.
Don't fret, I will be going back later this week to see A Woman in Berlin.)

--Spoiler Cut--
Seeing as how this is history, it's not really a spoiler. If you know nothing of this story, I don't want to ruin it for you...

First let me say that even though this movie is REALLY LONG, it is never boring. Just have dinner and use the restroom first.

Bruno Ganz is terrific in his portrayal of bureaucrat Horst Herold. His demeanor is such a contrast compared to the often frenzied or hyper-emotion scenes of the RAF. I particularly liked the luncheon meeting over lobster soup. It's a credit to Ganz that after sitting through 2 1/2 hours of violence and extremist proselytizing, that's the first scene that pops into my head.
As for the terrorists, I wish the film makers had centered more on the character of Ulrike Meinhof, played by Martina Gedeck. Although the sexy-flashy duo of Gudrun Ensslin and Andreas Baader demanded a lot of screen time, I wanted to delve deeper into the complexities of Ulrike's convictions and the loss of her children.
While I realize that shooting people in the face (repeatedly) drives your point home and sells movie tickets, I think I would have enjoyed this film even more if they had taken it to a more personal level with the characters and toned down the shock violence. That said, it's more than worth $10 and a few hours of your time. If you can't see it at a theater, definitely rent or buy the DVD.

The 69 Eyes

Just a quick blog to drop some pix I took at the meet and greet and show:

The 69 Eyes at The Door in Dallas, Texas
Friday Oct. 9, 2009

After making us stand outside in the cold (yes, it was actually cold) for almost an hour, the venue finally let us inside. We were directed to a dark and smelly hallway that was way too warm. With absolutely no fanfare, the band sort of seeped into the same hallway and started talking to people. There were only about 10 of us, so it was pretty one on one (or two on one if you are doing the math).

Here are my pix, in no particular order, except that Jussi is ALWAYS first!

That's me to Jussi's left.
FWIW, I cut myself out of all photos, if possible. You're not here to see me, right?

That's me again on Bazie's right, lol.

I was trying to get a good shot of Jussi's very awesome jacket, but I was thwarted by movement, ppl hugging him, and bad lighting.
Oh, and I seem to barely be able to work my own damn camera.

When most ppl think UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, they think Angelina Jolie. I think Jyrki69!
For god's sake, he tells fairy tales about bats to Russian orphans. What a guy!!!

None of my stage pix turned out well. I managed to salvage a couple:

I did manage to get a few videos that turned out ok...

Comments would be nice so that I know that someone actually looked at my blog for a change...

ROAD TRIP!!! 9/21-23/09
restraint
[info]marusya_56
My friend Terry and I went to San Antonio to see Imperative Reaction and Psyclon Nine at The Warehouse on September 22nd.

We pretty much just hung out the first day, it was all about Tuesday events, after all. I was going to be getting a tattoo of original artwork from the actual CLINT CARNEY of system syn and Imperative Reaction! I asked him several months ago to design me something original based on a few ideas and he did not disappoint! Since he lives in LA, and I just couldn't see myself traveling that far for a tat, I was going to shop around Dallas to see if I could find someone to do justice to his image. I wasn't having much luck when he announced he would be taking his gear on tour with IR. I snapped up the San Antonio date before anyone else had a chance!

Most of the daytime hours were spent waiting on the bands to arrive in San Antonio from Houston. Clint finally called and I went to pick him up and brought him back to my hotel. He worked on the stencil and set up his stuff...

Photos were taken of the whole process and the entire album can be found on my photobucket. Sorry if the images posted here are kind of large, I was just sick of fucking with them.

Here is the piece after about 24 hours of healing:

Then it was time to get ready for the show:

It seemed kind of amusing that the only female in the room never got to use the mirror! Srsly though, this pic is full of win. All men should wear eyeliner...

I dropped Clint off at the venue and went back to the hotel to get ready for the show. We turned quite a few heads at our elegant, conservative hotel. All the parking valets thought we were really cool, though. (Sidenote: wi-fi at the Emily Morgan sucks)

When we got to the show, opening act, Epsilon Zero was already into their set. They were pretty decent from what we heard, and the singer, Jamison Boaz spent a lot of time hanging out, taking pix, etc. with people the rest of the night:

IR went on stage next. According to Clint, IR and Psyclon Nine originally switched off playing first, but P9 made such a mess on the stage, IR preferred to go first so they could keep their equipment clean. I'm almost never happy with set length and this show was no exception. I would have loved for them to play through their entire discography, but you could tell Ted was exhausted.

I've decided I really like Adam Vex. He's very talkative onstage and I think his personality adds alot to their dynamic. Somehow though, I didn't end up with a single photo of him, just the stage shots.

I also didn't end up with any good stage shots of Clint. Usually he's jumping around like some sort of (Anti)Tigger, so everything comes out like a blur (...and then a memory...) with cool hair.

Joe Letz, drummer for Combichrist, filled in for usual IR drummer, Trevor Friedrich, due to injury. Joe has been posting the Best. Tour. Blog. Ever. on VampireFreaks. You should check out the insanity, lots of bathroom video, lol. Srsly, he is fuckin' crazy (but in a good way).

Psyclon Nine was next, but they are not really my style. However, their stage show was pretty interesting visually. I wonder how much latex they go through on a tour..

After the show, we hung out for a while and took more pix, etc. Never got to see Ted, though. As mentioned before, he was really tired and proceded to crash after their set. I talked some with Joe and Adam and practically everyone wanted to see my tat. My friend, Terry, was taking off the plastic and a random guy was like "OMG, did Clint just do that tat?!?" He took pix and gushed effusively regarding Clint's talent with the gun. I got about a million compliments and a lot of care advice from the very tattooed crowd in attendance.

One week later:
Now my back is peeling and itching like a motherfucker, but I am so incredibly happy. Even my extremely conservative sister had to admit that the tat is beautifully done. I can't wait until system syn tours next year so I can get something on my left shoulder.

Please visit www.clintcarney.com to check out Clint's "Violent Art" and www.systemsyn.com to wrap your brain around some intense tunes.
